A step away from suicide to a champion of Mental Health

A step away from suicide to a champion of Mental Health, scaffolder Matt 'George' Harthill of Lyndon SGB by BrandSafway UK tells his story at the launch of the Causeway Technologies Mental Health survey and pledge.

When someone opens up about their Mental Health challenges, it can be very hard, but it can also change lives. And this is why I applaud Matt for telling his story to me which I could see visibly was difficult and upsetting.

He was on his way to commit suicide when a colleague called him up and asked if he was okay. He said no, and in that moment, his life continued…..

You can also see a longer interview with Matt and Trevor Steven, Causeway Technologies Mental Health ambassador below.

From then on, he was and continues to be supported by his colleagues and has also supported other businesses like Balfour Beatty plc and Lendlease with his, as he puts it, ‘behind the bike shed’ talks.

I will let Matt tell you the rest of his story, which is compelling viewing.

In addition, Matt has also helped with a new face-to-face survey working with ex-Everton footballer and Causeway Mental Health Ambassador Trevor Steven.

This was launched recently with some disturbing and promising stats that included:

- 56% of those surveyed were either currently experiencing or have experienced a mental health problem in the past.

- When asked what they think contributes to poor mental health in the construction industry, 59% said long and irregular working hours, followed by financial pressures (50%).

- 65% support tech that monitors their work patterns to make sure they are taking breaks and working for a safe amount of time.

If you or someone you know is suffering, there are numerous charities you can reach out to, including:

And remember, always ask twice.. Are you ok? .. Are you really ok?

As that second ask could make all the difference.
