How is mobile mapping and drone data combining with AI tools to help us map the UK?

At Highways UK, Peter Haddock caught up with Helen Wattie from Getmapping to talk about how it's combining Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon Pegasus TRK solutions, with drone scans to transform the way cities are planned.

Helen: "With mobile mapping, you capture everything you can see in 360 degrees, including highly accurate LIDAR data.

This means planners can access precise information, such as the height of pavements or the condition of road signs."

"With our drone captured CityView aerial maps, we now cover 80% of the UK population at five-centimeter resolution.

"By combining this data and using AI technology we can now create a rich dataset that supports everything from planning new developments to creating digital twins of urban areas."

"For example, AI can now identify standard features like signposts or road markings much faster than traditional methods. We still use people to verify what AI finds, but the efficiency gains are significant."

Helen added, "If we get the planning right, we'll see accelerated building projects and better-functioning cities."
