Australian road widening project keeps the live traffic and live data flowing during construction

Out on a major road widening project in Sydney’s western suburbs, Peter Haddock caught up with Daniel Di Mattina of contractor Seymour Whyte Group. He explained how the business is using 12d Synergy’s common data environment to create digital workflows that support project delivery.

Dan: “This project is about keeping traffic flowing whilst we duplicate a single lane road into two lanes northbound and southbound, which once complete will reduce congestion. The key to delivering it is how we manage ever changing design, survey and construction data.”

“Back in 2019, on a similar Sydney Gateway project, we needed a way to take design information and get it to the field, not just for surveyors, but for engineers, allowing feedback to come back to the designers. That requirement led to the adoption of 12d Synergy as our central management platform.

“Fast forward to today, because everything is now in the cloud, we can connect the office to the field and the field back to the office.

“This allows us to move information seamlessly between teams and make sure everyone is working from the same data. That connectivity is particularly important when working to tight tolerances on site.

“For example, we’re using Leica Geosystems survey equipment on this project, with the data flowing straight into our modelling workflows. We can validate information in the field, send it back to the office, and use it to inform both design and construction decisions.

“This gives us real-time visibility, which means we can make adjustments on site quickly and ensure we’re building to the correct tolerances, especially on critical elements like concrete paving

“We now use 12d Synergy across multiple projects as a midpoint between different environments like ProjectWise and Autodesk Construction Cloud.

“And it doesn’t matter which platform people prefer, as 12d Synergy allows us to move that information and keep everything connected.”
