Award winning training supports the BAM UK Ireland Surveying and Engineering team

Peter Haddock recently spoke to Will Sherwood at its two day training session devised by its leadership team to upskill colleagues at the Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon 'The School' in Shropshire.

Will: "This training programme isn’t just about exposure to the latest equipment and tools like the BLK2GO, BLK Fly, or ground-penetrating radar (GPR).

"It’s about learning in a real world site setting that the school mirrors with tunnels, rail infrastructure, and even a sandpit to see machine technologies like 3D Machine Control and 3D Collision avoidance from Xwatch Safety Solutions part of Hexagon.

Talking about how the role of surveyors and engineers is evolving, Will added:

“We’re no longer working with paper drawings and coordinates anymore. Now, it’s about scans, models, and creating digital twins. Training on not just hardware but also the software that processes this data is crucial.

”By understanding what is possible, we can accelerate our own digital transformation and learn the practical skills that can make projects more efficient, accurate, and integrated.

“We did a similar training session last year, and in just 12 months, you can see how things have changed. So it's great to be able to keep up to date and, importantly, share experiences with colleagues.”

Winning one of the 'Nurturing Emerging Talent Awards' at the SCCS Survey Dinner, the team driving the training programme also included Mark Brueton FCInstCES, Michael Ellis and Steffan Henson.
