Costain Group and Flannery Plant Hire in UK first combined safety and productivity approach

Costain Group and Flannery Plant Hire introduce a UK first combined safety and productivity approach for a major National Highways project on the M6 Motorway.

In this video, we see a Flannery JCB 245X excavator fitted with 3D Collision avoidance from Xwatch Safety Solutions, integrated into the MC1, 3D Machine Control solution from Leica Geosystems

In addition, the machine is fitted with the AI human form recognition solution from Spillard Safety Systems

Peter Haddock met with Costain Project Director, Thomas Kenyon and Works Superintendant, Mark Malthouse to discuss its new approach.

Tom: “This is a major project for our client, National Highways, which at its height has involved over 50 gangs working on earthworks tasks.

“Throughout the project, we have collaborated with Flannery to see how we can continuously improve both productivity and safety.

“Using 3D machine control enables us to work with pinpoint accuracy, even near live traffic.

“And now we have added 3D collision avoidance using the same models to create exclusion zones, it’s a real game changer.

“Especially as the technology complements the AI safety solution we were already using.

“Ultimately combining these technologies, we have enhanced protection for both our workforce and the travelling public.”

Talking about the practical delivery benefits of the new solution, Mark Malthouse added:

“Our team has fully embraced the rollout, and the feedback has been fantastic.

“Communication between surveyors and operators has also improved, which means we’re building a safer, more productive environment.”
