Creating and sending 3D earthworks models in a van in the rain

Using Leica Geosystems ConX Cloud Solution and Web Interface, that is exactly what Chris Hooper of Hooper Surveying was doing when the heavens opened on a KHC Groundworks site Peter Haddock was visiting in Cornwall.

The visit was part of our 'South West Connected Tour' with Lee Knowles of One Point Survey Equipment.

Jumping into the van to find out more, Chris explained to Peter how his life has changed thanks to the advances in the Leica Geosystems surveying and 3D modelling technology he uses.

Chris: "When I started surveying onsite, it was a two person job setting out batters etc. But now I have learnt how to put 3D models together that are designed for the machines our customers, like KHC Groundworks, are using. It has transformed how I work.

"The big plus for me is I no longer have to spend hours in the car travelling from site to site to put in pins or check the work done. This is because everything is in one site model, and the KHC team also help to collect the data needed as they use their calibrated buckets to take key measurements of work that has been completed, like trenches, etc."

"And because I am using surveying equipment from Leica Geosystems that is also supported by One Point Survey, who provide the machine control to KHC, we all work in one ecosystem.

"With 50% of my time now in the office, we have also been able to expand our client base across Devon and Cornwall, which is a huge boost for the business."

Peter added: "Having travelled from site to site, the time taken up can be huge, so it's great to see Chris being able to use technology remotely and to even amend and send a new model from his van from one site to another."
