Hear how Perkins Engines converted a 75kW diesel telehandler to a hybrid diesel electric machine

The Pathfinder hybrid diesel-electric machine is able to work indoors and outdoors.

Peter Haddock visited its Peterborough facility to find out more from lead engineer Iain Evans, who discussed how the team used clever virtual simulation to accelerate the development of its Pathfinder machine.

Key discussion points in this video include:

- Conversion of an existing 75kW diesel-powered telehandler to an advanced powertrain incorporating a 48V battery system and 55kW Perkins 904J-E28T diesel engine.

-  Electric power only capability can allow for periods of indoor and quieter operation with the diesel engine performance optimised to charge the battery.

-  Virtual engineering simulation rapidly accelerated the conversion process from 3D computer modelling to retrofitting components.

- Digital control system supports optimised performance, including start-stop technology, leading to a reduction in energy consumption by 10%. (compared to the original machine)

- All components fit into the same original design of the telehandler.

Peter added: “For me, this is a fantastic example of how clever engineering can create hybrid advanced powertrain solutions that change the way we use machines. And this type of telehandler would be great for Plant Hire fleets in particular.”
