How Smart Machines Are Changing Construction Forever

The ultimate excavator setup with live scanning using a single Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon sensor chain, and it’s ready for machines NOW, as Jan Hakert of Makineo GmbH explained to Peter Haddock at bauma Jan:

“This is a world-first combination that we have put together on a Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) wheeled excavator, which can now collect live 3d data as it digs.

It’s like having a drone on the end of your boom.”

“The heart of this system is how we have been able to integrate this capability into the sensor chain that powers the Leica Geosystems MC1 machine control platform.

It means we don’t have to add any more components to the machine.” And there is more, including:

  • A dynamic weighing system
  • Full safety solution integrated with the KTEG Copilot system
  • Tool recognition that automatically adjusts the machine’s hydraulics
  • Operator-customised joysticks that are heated and can vibrate

The big news is how quickly the data can be accessed and utilised, and the development of a unified display, as Jan explained:

“Our new display launched at Bauma can bring all digital systems into one interface, reducing clutter, whilst improving visibility to help keep the operator focused.”

“The data is not just stored locally, it goes straight to the cloud. So you can scan the outside area in real time, upload the point cloud it creates and generate a volume calculation.

And that’s gives 1–2cm GPS-level accuracy from a machine that’s already on site.” “So we’re building digital twins as we dig. That’s where the industry is going, and we’re already there.”
