JCBs latest Hydrogen Excavator prototype with Lee Harper Chief Engineer for Electrification

Will 2023 be the year of Hydrogen? Well, JCB certainly has the momentum, as Peter Haddock finds out in what is the second in our series of ‘JCB’s Hydrogen Journey’ from the UK team making it happen. In this latest episode, Peter speaks to Lee Harper, who is the Chief Engineer of Electrification, and he is our new ‘Mr Hydrogen’ as his journey (16 years to date) has been working on both the proven electric range and now the Hydrogen machines.

In this video, he introduces the latest prototype of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered excavator, which I saw in operation in the Kevin Quarry last year. Interestingly JCB has made fuel cell technology work, but Lee and the team are not at the stage of putting this solution into mass production. This is due to the challenges the fuel cell approach gives the end user, as we discover in this interview.

But what strikes us with this journey is that a huge amount of energy has already gone into finding out how to build new Hydrogen engines and deliver the fuel to them so they can operate. See the video with Peter and Ryan Ballard of JCB on the Hydrogen Engine here -    • JCB's new Hydroge...   And this is why you will have to follow the series, as in the next episode, we discover how the Hydrogen Backhoe Loader uses a different delivery solution to the Hydrogen engine.

We will also be finding out more about Hydrogen in the coming weeks in a new podcast to be recorded with Hydrogen UK Chief Executive Clare Jackson. This is a subject you can be sure we will be following, and Peter will be reporting on it with great interest, as we believe it will be a game changer for our industry and the environment.
