Mobile mapping combines with ground penetrating radar for safer surveying

Vehicle mounted mobile mapping and ground penetrating radar for underground surveying deliver safer and faster survey results for Survey Operations.

Peter Haddock went onsite with the team in Southport and to its nearby head office to see how it’s using Leica Geosystems equipment to survey a road and pathway, viewing the data in a matter of hours.

From capturing millions of points per second on the road to identifying buried utilities before construction begins, the technology is delivering real benefits for surveyors and their clients.

And what really stood out to me was how the different systems work together, from data capture on site to processing and CAD back at the office.

Here are some of the highlights in this video:

Leica Pegasus TRK: With two scanners capturing more than 4 million points per second, the mobile mapping system delivers dense point clouds, colour imagery and accurate spatial data.

Improved safety: As Mark from Survey Operations explained, the technology reduces the need for surveyors to work in the middle of carriageways or alongside busy roads.

It can also reduce the requirement for traffic management, helping lower costs for clients.

Underground utility detection: Martin demonstrated how Stream UP and Stream DP GPR radar systems use electromagnetic waves to identify potential pipes, cables, voids and other buried features.

A complete picture underground: Combining ground radar with electromagnetic locating equipment helps the team build a more comprehensive understanding of existing infrastructure before excavation and development work begins.

From field to office: Dylan demonstrated how the collected ground radar data is analysed, while Robert showed how quickly captured street data can be processed using Leica Pegasus office software.

What I particularly liked was seeing the complete workflow in action. We were capturing data on a street in Southport, and around an hour and a half later, that same environment was already being visualised and manipulated back at Survey Operations' head office.

And as the team explained, the quality of the data is making a real difference to how they deliver surveys.
