National Highways Are CHANGING the Future of Transportation

Having talked to Joanna for a number of years in this interview, Peter gets an update on the last 12 months and how National Highways has been changing its approach to innovation.

Joanna: “Having looked at how we can better deliver innovations to our projects, we now have a new focus on scaling, sustaining and adopting innovation.

“To do this, we have been working on a new scorecard for introducing solutions and innovations, which includes looking at key areas like feasibility.

“This has been developed from the ISO standard for innovation management and will help us to work with the supply chain to successfully scale new solutions and products.

“For example we have been working on various different digital, safety and decarbonisation projects. And one of those is a carbon negative asphalt solution from low carbon materials, which we are trialling on the M11 with the aim of collecting data on how it fairs in a real world environment.

“By accelerating our processes, we have been able to enable this to take place in just eight months. And once we have analysed the data and are happy with its performance, we then adapt our standards with the evidence we have collected.”

Peter added: With National Highways on its own net zero plan for 2030/2040/2050 it’s clear that accelerating the adoption of digital solutions and other innovations is key to delivering on its goals. And I look forward to continuing to follow their journey.
