Where next for the construction sector

As part of our Highways UK event interview series, supported by Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon, Peter Haddock talks to industry expert, Mark Lawton of Skanska.

Mark: "Today, if we look to the future and how we can be successful with semi-automation and full autonomy, it's all about designing for machines. We have the equivalent of a 'Herd of Elephants' (machines) being fitted with 3D machine control all coming at us. So we need simple designs that allow us to be the voice of the machine or robot onsite.

With so many advancements in technology like mobile mapping, the future is looking very interesting. What really excites me is how we will use sensor technologies to make machines into sophisticated real-time surveyors. Not to mention conducting digital rehearsals for projects, using models to explore and rectify potential issues before machines get onsite."

Peter also talked with Mark two years ago at the Highways UK event, and you can hear just what they had to say in this video from our YouTube archive    • Mark Lawton of Sk...
