Airborne mapping with the new Leica Geosystems MultiMapper

Airborne mapping has taken off with the launch this week of the Leica Geosystems MultiMapper, which features a hybrid sensor for helicopter and wing strap applications.

To find out more, Peter Haddock met with expert Keith Peterson at the preview of the MultiMapper at Intergeo conference last year, who pointed out some of its key features.

Keith: With the MultiMapper, we're bringing the Formula One flair to airborne survey. It weighs just 25kgs and features our latest airborne sensors. We have a LiDAR with up to 2 MHz, combining with 13 cameras, so you can have all four directions in oblique.

“In addition, we have a nice, wide array on the nadir with RGB, near infrared, and a sophisticated stabilisation system. This combines with a heading correction and the standard meeker interface, so we can mount this on any helicopter, or fixed wing aircraft.”

“It can even fit inside your traditional survey portholes with a mount, so it gives you full flexibility on where you want to be and how you want to execute your flight.”

“So we're not just talking about ground surveying anymore, we're just going into the air and then seeing all that's below us. And customers will be able to get their hands on the MultiMapper later this year.
