Construction Sport the grassroots charity bringing the sector together

Construction Sport, the grassroots charity using sport to connect people at all levels in the industry and support individuals and families that might be struggling.

Peter Haddock talked to groundworker by trade and the charity founder, Steve Kerslake at a recent Mental Health Survey and Pledge Launch with Causeway Technologies.

They discussed the sectors challenges and how Construction Sport is already making a huge difference by raising funds and spirits in the sector.

With its new website, www.constructionsport.com, just launched and its 100 club allowing businesses to support it, Peter also found out why Steve couldn’t stand on the sidelines and set up the charity.

Steve: “There are so many connections between the construction industry and sport, but when you google construction, it has a terrible image.

“However, when you join the sector, it’s a fantastic place to be and involves a lot of teamwork.

“For example, when you can step back and say I was part of that big project and the team that delivered it. It’s like being part of a trophy winning football team.

“And we take that same passion into Construction Sport, pulling people together from every level of the industry to play sports and take part in activities to raise money for those in need.

“I have personally got so much out of taking part in our events, and I truly believe that we can make a difference. By shining a positive and supportive light on our sector, we will be able to keep people with us and attract people to join us.”

Changing behaviours on littering is our biggest challenge. This was the message from Freda Rashdi, Head of Customer Journeys for National Highways, when Peter Haddock caught up with her at Highways UK in our specially designed studio on the Leica Geosystems stand. Freda: "As National Highways, we have to grade our network for litter, and this inspection process and manual litter picking takes up a huge amount of resources, particularly in hotspots like the slip roads of motorway junctions.
