KHC Groundworks benefits from being early adopters of 3D Machine Control

“We are five weeks ahead on what is a very challenging job, thanks to using Leica Geosystems 3D machine control with our Liebherr Dozer and SMP Parts tiltrotator enabled Hyundai excavator." Says KHC Limited Groundworks site manager, Darryl Simmons.

In this second video of our 'South West Connected Tour' with Peter Haddock and Lee Knowles of One Point Survey Equipment, Peter catches up with Darryl, whom he met over four years ago.

At the time, he was an operator for Kirk Hough, responsible for trialling Leica Geosystems machine control at an Engcon UK Ltd dig day.

Since then, he has become the business's site manager and dozer operator, fully adopting the technology and partnering with local firm Hooper Surveying for 3D modelling.

Darryl: "We just couldn't work without the technology now, and by combining with local engineer Chris Hooper, it's even easier to do our 3D models.

"The investment in the technology has definitely paid for itself, and we are doing the work up to 50% faster with complete accuracy.

"We also use less fuel due to not moving the tracks as much because the tiltrotator is so flexible. And with the models sent over the GPS network using the Leica ConX system, there is no waiting around.

"Being one of the first adopters in our region, we have really taken full advantage of sharing the information with our customers.

"This has led to more work, and thanks to our relationship with One Point Survey, we have expanded our machine control fleet, knowing they are here to support us."

Peter added: "Having witnessed this journey from the start, I am impressed with how machine control and surveying technology have been widely adopted by KHC and the success this has delivered."
