OBrien Contractors on winning and delivering work with AGTEK 3D earthworks software

Winning work always comes first, but how to make it profitable happens next, as Tom O’Brien of O’Brien Contractors explains to Peter Haddock following its recent rollout of AGTEK's dirt simple earthworks solution.

The business has been an early adopter of technology for many years and runs a fleet of 3D machine control enabled equipment using solutions from Leica Geosystems, Topcon and Trimble.

Tom: “Our challenge has always been to stay ahead of the competition whilst offering our clients the services and approaches they want to deliver their projects. We now offer 3D machine control from all three main suppliers. “However, with this approach, we are faced with overcoming other challenges when it comes to designing models for machines that could be operating on the Leica Geosystems MC1 platform one day and the Topcon 3D-MC the next.

“This is why our latest investment in technology has been around software that can streamline the whole project management cycle from tendering to delivering the final ‘as built’ models to our clients.

“As part of this process, we analysed the time and resources put into key stages of our business and recently invested in the AGTEK software solution that has been popular in the US for many years to tackle our bottlenecks.

“Now, as soon as we win a job, we create models designed for our machine controlled fleet, ensuring we are ready to begin work as fast as possible. The operators then talk to our engineers, and if any adjustments need to be made, the models can be changed very quickly, keeping productivity up onsite.”

Peter added: “It’s very clear that Tom and his team are keeping one step ahead, and I look forward to visiting a job site they have won using AGTEK with them in the future.”
