UKs first Bell Equipment UK B60 4x4 articulated dump truck in action

UK’s first Bell Equipment UK  B60 4x4 articulated dump truck in action at Smiths Bletchington 's  largest limestone quarry, Dewars Farm.

Peter Haddock caught up with Quarry Operations Manager John Bell to find out why this 60 tonne machine was the right choice for a site that has recently secured a quarry extension, adding more than 10 years to its operational life.

John explained: “We needed something that was fuel efficient whilst being able to travel across the bottom of the quarry floor when it’s going to be a bit rough and sticky, as well as having the capacity to run through the life of the site.

“With our extension, we are moving closer to major infrastructure, so we have paired it with a new Volvo Construction Equipment EC950F 100 tonne excavator from SMT GB  which has the power to mechanically extract the harder lower limestone beds.

“Before making the decision, we completed detailed time and motion studies, comparing articulated and rigid haulage options, and the Bell was the most efficient and productive option for us.

“We also had the operators test one of the smaller Bell trucks with the same cab, as their opinion is key, and they enjoyed the overall ride and user experience.

“With the square body design, it is proving an easier loading target for the excavator operator, which improves loading efficiency, again reducing fuel burn.

“So all around it ticks all the boxes and can help us extract material all year round.”
