What next for National Highways

Peter Haddock talks to Malcolm Dare, Board and Country level Commercial, Procurement and Supply Chain Director for National Highways at its recent Net-Zero and innovation event, held at its Development Centre near Morton-on-the-March.

They talk about technology, innovation, sustainability, Net-Zero, social value, remote control for mobile earthworks, attracting the 'Tech Savvy' generation, diversity, inclusion and much more.

Malcolm: "We have such a large amount of money from the taxpayer to improve the road network. So it's our role at National Highways to be a catalyst for change within the industry. When you do things better, productivity goes up, social value goes up, and we can really hit it out the park on carbon targets."

"In the past, when I have gone to a site, people talk about utilisation of equipment being at 30%. If you were delivering those numbers in a factory, you would be fired."

"We want to use our Development Centre to help the supply chain bring innovation into the sector, as here we can try it, model it, experiment and work with a business to get it right. So when we go on the ground, we know that things will happen smoothly and quickly."

Malcolm also highlights the work of Balfour Beatty plc on the M4 as a great example of how a project can be delivered more efficiently.
