Perkins launches the new power dense 904 engine

More Power. Same Footprint. Perkins launches the new power dense 904 engine at Conexpo

To find out more about this new  3.6-litre engine, Peter Haddock spoke to product expert Umar Syed

Umar: “Our customers asked us for more power, more torque and more uptime,  all without increasing machine footprint or complexity. The result is a high power version of our proven platform, engineered to deliver exceptional power density while maintaining the packaging advantages that modern machine design increasingly demands.”

Key performance highlights include:

• 129 kW (173hp) of power from a 3.6-litre engine

• 740 Nm of torque

• Twin turbochargers for faster transient response and stronger torque backup

• Upgraded fuel system and core components

• 1,000-hour service intervals enabled by changes to components, including a larger sump

• Resized aftertreatment system to support higher power output

As Umar highlighted, the goal was not simply adding power, it was maintaining platform consistency for OEM integration.

Umar: “It’s a common architecture across the whole power range. This allows OEMs to integrate one engine platform across multiple machines. And this flexibility matters as manufacturers increasingly look to simplify engineering, parts commonality and service support across fleets.

“This engine is aimed squarely at high productivity applications where machines operate under sustained load. So it’s ideal for equipment like telehandlers, compact wheel loaders, excavators, directional drills and other material handling equipment.

“If a customer’s application is running at full load the majority of the time, this will be the engine for them.”
