Key design features of the new TS20 Total Station revealed

What are the key design features of the new TS20 Total Station from Leica Geosystems?

Peter Haddock caught up with product director Leo Köpf at Intergeo to find out how over 200 engineers have brought this new product to life, which is now being delivered to hire companies and end users across the UK and global markets.

Leo: “At just 5kg, the TS20 is dramatically lighter than its predecessor, making it far easier to carry in the field. It’s also a very robust and accurate Total Station.

“The IP66 rated housing is pressure tested, with all covers and seals are designed to be tight, while still allowing for temperature exchange to prevent internal corrosion.

“Thanks to our new 20-megapixel camera with a redesigned imaging pipeline, the image quality is fundamentally different. There’s no distortion at the borders, and measurements can be taken directly from single images with confidence.”

Connectivity is now native with dual eSIMs built directly into the instrument. The first is for GeoCloud Protect, which can track and lock the TS20 if stolen. And the second eSIM is for user defined data workflows, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi also fully integrated, so there is no external radio handle and true 360° antenna coverage.

AI is also embedded directly into the instrument, powered by a dedicated Neural Processing Unit entirely onboard with no internet connection required.

Today, this allows us to detect the prism automatically and warn the user if the wrong one is configured, helping to avoid errors.

“We’ve created a very strong hardware foundation. From here, software and AI capabilities can continue to evolve,  this is only the beginning.”
