Leica Geosystems showcases solutions supporting Modern Methods of Construction at GEO Business

From the factory to the site, Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon Geosystems showcases a suite of solutions supporting Modern Methods of Construction at Digital Construction Week and GEO Business. As the construction industry looks to be more sustainable, efficient and safer, modern methods of construction like offsite fabrication are becoming commonplace.

And now, a new workflow combining surveying equipment with 3D design and software solutions is set to support the end to end process from manufacturing to installation onsite.  Chris Evans from Leica Geosystem explains how it works, walking Peter Haddock around its specially designed MMC mockup at the show, starting with the Bricsys® CAD software.

Chris: "So we've put together a structure that we can use to replicate what would happen through the stages of MMC construction in the UK. This involves first looking at the design process for manufacturing and assembly and then utilising our equipment and technology to ensure that what's being created in the factory environment is being built correctly. "This means taking the 3D design and using our surveying equipment to check it in the factory environment before it goes to the site. We then use that same design on site to position everything accurately so that when the materials do turn up, they go in the right place. 

"We then do the final checks at the end of the project to ensure that it has been installed correctly so that we don't have to go back and do rework because this is very costly to a project and can seriously impact the margins. "And ultimately, if we get every MMC led project right first time, we can speed up the construction process whilst also reducing carbon emissions."
