Mobile Mapping investment will dramatically improve surveying for MHLS says MD Stuart

"Mobile Mapping will give us miles of data, turned around in a matter of hours, rather than spending weeks on the ground,” said Stuart Gilling, MD of Malcolm Hughes Land Surveying, when Peter Haddock met him at Highways UK.

Stuart and the team were showcasing the latest Pegasus TRK700 EVO mobile mapping technology from Leica Geosystems on their stand.

So Peter asked him about the benefits it would deliver to his customers. Stuart: “It’s simple to use. We can mount it onto the roof of one of our vehicles and just drive down the road we want to map, capturing highly accurate data. This removes the need for traffic management and limits the boots on the ground."

“Our team then converts the data into point clouds that can visualise the road itself. "

“Because the volume of data you can capture far outweighs what's possible with conventional methods, we can give engineers access to hugely rich data from road damage to signage."

“And because it uses laser scanning, you get penetration through vegetation. So, on the embankments, we use software and AI cleanup tools to classify that data, removing the vegetation to create bare earth models."

“Similarly, we can capture information on structures like bridges and much much more”
