Experienced operator Simon shares his thoughts on using 3D Machine Control

"I'm 58 years old, and I've been operating machines for about 25 years. I now use 3D machine Control, which has made my job much quicker."

These are the words of experienced operator Simon from Steve Hoskins Construction who Peter Haddock met on our Leica Geosystems 'South West Connected Tour' with Lee Knowles of dealer One Point Survey.

They were on a housebuilding project where Simon was digging plots with a Develon (formerly Doosan) 23 tonne DX225 LG excavator that had been fitted with machine control by the One Point Survey team.

Simon had been using machine control for over 12 months when Peter met him last year, and he kindly took time out to share his experience with him:

Simon: "I was sceptical at first when the system was fitted to the machine, but it didn't take long to get the hang of it. I always say to other operators that it's like a guide that replaces the old stakes in the ground.

"The difference is that I get a 3D model sent to the machine by my engineering colleague Harry. And this means I can track to the next plot and get on with the job as I haven't got to wait for an engineer to set out the levels."

With over 25 years in the seat, Simon is definitely the brains inside the cab, so Peter was also keen to get some advice from Simon for other operators about using 3D Machine Control.

Simon: "It was a bit daunting to start with, but once you get your head around it, it's a very natural thing to use."
